Group of experimental archaeology „Senzeme”
Group of experimental archaeology „Senzeme” („The Land of the Ancestors”) is an organization that reconstructs everyday life and warfare of Late Iron Age (9.–13. centuries) of the Eastern Baltic peoples (Couronians, Semigallians, Selonians and Latgallians), Baltic Finns (Livs) and Scandinavian settlers (from Grobin settlement) from the territory of modern day Latvia.
Beginnings of the group are in 2003, but since 2006 „Senzeme” is an officially approved organization. The main forms of our activities are studies of an archaeological artifacts and making and testing of different replicas, life in an experimental village where we test the main ideas of our research.
Members of the club are from different occupation, there are historians, archaeologists, craftsmen, geographers, folklorists, artists, IT specialists, interpreters, linguists and students, but we all are united with the interest and love to cognition of common past of our ancestors from 1000 year old past.
Main directions of our recent research are connected with the introduction of the rotary vessels (hand-mill, whetstones, lathe and potter’s wheel) in the beginning of 11th century, techniques of prehistoric building construction, different aspects of production of ancient clothing and ancient warfare through studies of ancient artifacts, folklore materials and practical trainings and seminars.
We gladly participate in different festivals and events; cooperate with institutions of the environment protection and conservation of historic monuments; do lecturing in schools.
